Skype Session with New Zealand Friends

We had the opportunity to Skype with our New Zealand friends this past week. It was such a special experience! Our friends in Rotorua toured us through their classrooms, their school grounds, and even their newly planted school garden. We have noticed how friendly and enthusiastic these new friends are to us. Many of us are enjoying talking with them on a regular basis on the weekends. It can be a bit tricky to plan for a 19 hour time difference!

Where In The World Are We?

We’re confident that you can locate the United States on world map. So, zoom in to the center of the map. Our country is divided up into 50 regions or states. We live in Kansas, right in the middle of the map. In fact, the geographic center of our continental United States is not far from where we live!

Because we live in one of our states’ major cities, it’s usually on most maps. Our city is called Wichita. You’ll notice that there are not any other big cities around. We would have to travel about 200 miles to get to the next big city.

The Wichita area has a population of about 500,000 people. Because we are on the wide-open prairie, space is not a problem. Most Wichitans live in single-residence homes with garages for our cars and a big yard.

We rely on cars for transportation. Because everything is so spread out, we don’t walk or ride bikes, unless for recreation, and we don’t have much public transportation. We drive….well, our parents drive. We can’t drive until we are l7 years old.

We are the home to important aircraft manufacturing, but those businesses aren’t near residential areas. We have very strict laws about pollution, so our air is clean and healthy. Plus, it’s so windy here on the plains, any pollution would be blown away!

We are called Midwesterners. Midwesterners have a reputation of being very friendly and patient. We don’t have beautiful mountains, beaches, or forests, but we do have each other. Kansans invest a lot in their relationships with people. It’s a great place to live.
